French
As everyone knows the earlier you learn a language the better and so French is taught from Year 2 at DESS. With this early start the children have the advantage of being familiar with the language before they reach KS2.
From Year 3 to Year 6 the French curriculum is designed to give ample opportunity for progress with all four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) being developed.
If you are new to DESS and want to catch-up with the other children in your class, or if you are already at DESS and want to practise your French, you can now download the vocabulary lists for your Year group, as well as find French Sound file on an MP3 file that accompanies it.

Emphasis is placed on communication in a fun learning environment. At DESS, French lessons include songs, games and puzzles as well as lots of talking practice (in French, of course!).
Which class will get the most points for fantastic effort this year?
The children have 2 half-hour lessons a week and from Year 3 onwards the syllabus is based on the Alex and Zoƫ series text book. Resources also include videos, audio CDs, and CD ROM's.
Meet Alex and Zoe. Two of the characters from the
text book series used in French lessons at DESS.
The curriculum covers a variety of topics including among others; personal information (name, age etc.), colours, families, telling the time, weather, numbers, animals, where I live, clothes and, of course, food. Each year group has a French super-snack with croissants, cheese and chocolate cakes galore!
