Mathematics Homework
Week commencing 4th May 2008
Revision II - 4 exercises
Maximum Capacity - revise quick addition, estimation, and number sense skills.
Step 1. In Maximum Capacity, you play the role of an lift attendant who must bring as many gorillas as possible to the eighth floor for the annual Gorilla's Ball at the Jungle Hotel! The only problem is, the doors to the ball close in three minutes, and there are still hundreds of anxious gorillas waiting. Bring as many as you can to the eighth floor in three minutes.
Step 2. Check the weight capacity at the top of the lift. It changes with each trip. Drag the gorillas into the lift. Drag as many as you can without exceeding the weight capacity. You will have to use your quick addition, estimation, and number sense skills. The weight of each gorilla is listed on its hat, or, on its bag.
Step 3. When you are satisfied, click the button next to the lift. If your estimation did not exceed the weight capacity, the gorillas you dragged into the lift will successfully make it to the ball. However, if the weight of the gorillas you dragged into the lift exceeds the weight limit, the lift will break down and you will have to start all over again. Click the "ClearX" Button in the "Weight Board" to clear the gorillas and add new ones.
Step 4. See how many total gorillas you can take to the ball. You will find out your total at the end of the game.
Tony Fraction's Pizza Shop - revise simple equivalent fractions
Step 1. Read the client order. A sample client order might read "I'll have a large pizza, 1/2 pepperoni, 2/5 mushrooms and 1/10 bacon"
Step 2. Select pizza size. In this case, select "large". This will cause the denominator to change to 10, as a large pizza has ten slices.
Steps 3 & 4. Select toppings. First, click on pepperoni and apply to half of the pizza (5 slices). Next, click on mushrooms and apply it to 2/5 of the pizza (4 slices). Finally, click on bacon and apply it to 1/10 of the pizza (1 slice). NOTE - if you make a mistake, select a different pizza size and then re-select the original pizza size to get a new pizza.
Step 5. Click on "send". If you are correct, you will make a sale. Incorrect pizzas will cost you! Enjoy the game!
Clara Fraction's Ice Cream Shop - convert improper fractions to mixed numbers
Step 1. Read the client order. A sample client order might read "I'll have an ice cream with the following. 7/3 vanilla, 5/2 chocolate and 8/3 strawberry. Convert to mixed numbers one at a time. Convert 7/3 to 2 1/3."
Step 2. Select 1 scoop and then vanilla. Apply to cone. Apply one more vanilla scoop to the cone, making two total scoops. Then, select 1/3 (still on vanilla) and apply to cone. Repeat with the other flavours specified in the order.
Step 3. Click on "send". If you are correct, you will make a sale. Incorrect cones will cost you!
