Our Gardens

Last summer the school gardens between buildings were planted out - hopefully to become habitats which will be used for Science study. One has been designed as a desert habitat while the other is a rainforest environment, with its own overhead sprinkler system which rains twice a day! In less than a year we are thrilled at the amount of growth to be seen in each garden and are delighted to have tasted our own bananas from the flourishing banana trees!

Year 4

We were invited to the Sony Science Show at Knowledge Village. The Sony scientist demonstrated some amazing experiments for us! He showed us how to make a three-legged boomerang and changed the sound of instruments by playing them inside a giant helium bag! We loved the air cannon which shot air bullets at plastic sheeting! We can't wait to try them at home!

Year 5

We have been studying Changing Sounds this term. In April, we were lucky enough to have the Prince of Wales band visit the school to play demonstrate their marching for us. They played a large selection of instruments, from French horn to tambourine, and had us all dancing around in the Hall. We heard the echoes from their instruments resounding off the surrounding buildings as they marched around the school field. The perfect demonstration of sound echoes being bounced back to us!

We carried out an investigation into ways we could muffle sounds and we tested different materials to find the best sound insulators.

We created musical scales by changing the water levels in bottles and we made simple versions of pan pipes which we can use to demonstrate the changing pitch of notes as we blow across the straws.

Year 6

In Year Six our topic has been How we See Things. It has included light and shadows, reflections and the Eye. We had a lot of fun with torches, mirrors and prisms and we tried to split the light spectrum by shining light onto the edges of prisms.

Did you see that?

We set up several investigations and activities during SATs revision time and had lots of fun!
