FDESS Celebrates International Day in Style!

The first ever ‘Around the World at DESS’ International Day held in February 2009 was a fantastic success.   The lively atmosphere, the fun activities, the delicious foods and colourful costumes made the day a real celebration of our many cultural identities within DESS.  We had 31 countries represented by display stalls, 48 countries participate in the Parade of Nations, 35 countries contribute 50 recipes for the International Cookbook and 10 different countries entertain us in the Global Stage Show.

With their Eton Mess, the English Stall won the ‘Sweet’ category for the Yummiest Food competition while the Pakistan stall delighted us with their winning ‘Savory’ entry of Chicken Biryani.

Thank you to our student reporters from Five Red – Marya Manna and Roanna Currie for sharing some of their thoughts on the day.  They both said they would definitely like to have another International Day next year!

Best / Fun activities – The Double Decker bus because it was cool and had a TV.  The Spanish stall because of the doll making.

Funniest / Favourite Moment of the Day – When the candy was thrown out from the stage and everyone ran for it.

Interesting facts learned – The Edinburgh castle was built 1000 years ago but it was rebuilt.  The Hawaiian alphabet only has 13 letters.

The following are some of the activities and acts that took place - we hope you enjoy them as much as we did!
