Opera gets a "Bravo"

at Dubai English Speaking School

The children of both Dubai English Speaking School and Dubai English Speaking College gained quite an insight into the delights that opera has to offer when Bravo Productions, an opera company from Washington D.C., visited us in January. The children were educated about the different types of voice from the three opera singers: a coloratura (the highest female soprano voice), a tenorino (a high tenor voice) and a lyric baritone (for fast moving pieces) with piano accompaniment.

Once we had experienced the range of voices and learnt about the training required to become an opera singer, we were then exposed to a variety of music from traditional operas and operettas such as Mozart's The Magic Flute, to more modern musicals such as Bernstein's West Side Story, through to a musical fusion of jazz and opera. The children were able to appreciate the variety of music that the voice can provide.

As with good performances, pupil participation was essential, so the children were enthused when asked to experience warming up and breathing techniques. The children showed their appreciation by calling out "BRAVO" and gave a standing ovation, which Bravo Productions well deserved.

And it was all for a good cause. Instead of paying for the company to visit, the children gave donations towards UNICEF and raised a very generous AED 5,490.00. Bravo indeed!!
