Recycling at DESS

In 2005, DESS set up a recycling centre at the front of school. We have facilities to recycle paper, cardboard, aluminium cans, plastic, glass and batteries. With the help of the Emirates Environmental Group, which arranges most of the collections of materials, the children are being encouraged to become involved in recycling as much of our waste as possible – particularly here in Dubai which currently has the highest global footprint in the world!

Year Six visit Jebel Ali Container Glass Factory

As part of their Science Week activities, Year Six went along to find out more about the process of recycling glass in Dubai. The children saw the whole process from the collection of cullet (glass to be recycled), through the furnace stage to the production of sparkling new containers.

At DESS we have had two glass recycling bins for the last two years and the school was awarded a certificate for being the top school supporting the campaign in 2007. We hope to increase awareness of the importance of recycling glass which is one of the cleanest and least damaging recycling processes to the environment.

Would YOU really rather see all this glass go into landfill sites?

Recycling Challenge & Mobile Mania

The Recycling Challenge (KS 2) and Mobile Mania (KS 1) competitions ran all through the week with children being asked to make models or mobiles from recyclable materials. The results were fantastic! Some of the models and mobiles are shown here.
